ABOUT
ICDC

This camp aims to cultivate globally-minded talents, strengthen students’ ability to put what they have learned in school into practice to solve problems comprehensively, and encourage students to finish hands-on projects. It is hoped that through this camp the gap between traditional college education and market requirement can be bridged.

Students attending the camp come from multiple countries and are put into groups. Assigned with a common contest theme, members in each group discuss with one another through social media to come up with a proposal before the camp officially begins. Once it starts, students will have to strive to materialize their proposals.

To implement the proposals, students must use their acquired background knowledge to solve problems. This will include finding solutions, producing blueprints, designing product parts break down illustration and listing out needed materials, which makes purchase easier. Finally, students also have to use machines and tools to produce the product. The whole processes can bring up student’s ability to solve complicated engineering problems, strengthen teamwork as well as effective communication and project management skills.

There are three schools from three different countries included in the camp. Through working together closely we can achieve better understanding and cooperation as well as expand the international perspective. Moreover, students can experience the problem-oriented projects which are common in reality. In the camp, students all communicate in English and provide their specialties to help their team, which could strengthen international communication skills, group cooperation and hands-on experiences. Furthermore, through the international camp, students can make friends from all over the world and prepare themselves for this globalized world.

Micro Credits Course for Maker(I): Design Thinking

This course aims at the design innovation of engineering-related issues using the problem/project-based learning (PBL) model. The program will adopt design thinking from problem definition, needs finding, empathy map, brainstorming, user journey map, benchmarking analysis, and redesign to create innovative proposals for the assigned topic. The students will learn to communicate and collaborate with their interdisciplinary teammates to refine and present their design proposals.

Micro Credits Course for Maker(II): Maker-related tools and Prototyping

Prototyping and testing are essential in innovation using design thinking. This workshop will apply learning by doing strategy to cover basic training in maker-related tools such as Arduino programming, electromechanical integration, 3D printing, and laser cutting for prototype realization and design validation. Through the given design requirements of an integrated project, the students learn to communicate and collaborate with their interdisciplinary teammates to propose an innovative design, produce the prototype using the trained tools, and present the project result.

Practice of International Design Innovation

This course applies design thinking and engineering techniques to solve and improve practical issues using the problem/project-based learning (PBL) model. The students from different disciplines will form an international team in the International Capstone Design Camp & Contest (ICDC) to practice design innovation. The students will apply their professional knowledge and collaborate with their teammates to accomplish the project. The teachers from international partner universities will serve as mentors to help the students review the design and learn from the hands-on process. Each team has to use the on-site maker facilities to produce the design prototype for design demonstration and validation. A public presentation will be held at the end of the design camp to share the students’ experiences and design results.
